Google hasn’t been hiding the fact that it has made significant changes in the new algorithm it’s launching today. Many are referring to this algorithm update as ‘mobilegeddon’ because of the impact it’s expected to have on websites that aren’t mobile friendly. Previous updates to the algorithm, such as Panda, affected approximately 11% of sites and caused a significant stir in the online community as the rankings for major brands were affected. In a blog post from February, Google published that this update, “will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have significant impact in our search results.”
The answer is, it depends. If your site currently isn’t optimized at all for mobile, your mobile search rankings will be impacted. Google has said, though, that this algorithm will just impact mobile (as in phone) search and will not impact desktop search. Have you checked your Google Analytics recently to see how many visitors are from a mobile device? You might want to do that. (Under Audience, click on Mobile and then Overview to see how your visitors stack up per device category)
If you don’t know if your site is considered mobile-friendly or not, Google has created a tool that can help you know for sure. Plug your URL into Google’s Mobile-Friendliness tool and see what Google sees when it visits your site from a mobile device. With more than half of all Americans now owning a smartphone, it goes without saying that if you haven’t started to think about optimizing your site for mobile, now is the time.
Ultimately, Google is trying to make its search results more relevant to its users and guess what? Nearly 60% of internet users are accessing it via mobile devices. As that number continues to grow, Google wants to make sure that those users are getting the content they are seeking in a format that is optimized for those devices.
If your site is not mobile-friendly and your online audience moves beyond the desktop (as many are), it’s time to make the move to mobile. Interested in learning more? Contact us today to see how to mobilize your site and get it back in Google’s good graces.
