There was a time not too long ago when it seemed that the coolest gadgets were the smallest. As technology advanced, we were able to jam more memory and power into smaller and smaller devices.
The phablet is turning that on its head - well sort of. As the recent infographic from Carlisle & Gallagher Consulting Group entitled The Rise of Phablets (pictured below) showed, the phablet is a highly powered, call receiving, internet surfing, work performing device. Screen size is getting larger and people are willing to carry a larger device instead of two devices. Makes sense, right?
What this means for you if you are responsible for the management of a website is that you must accomodate these screens along with the desktop, the tablet, and the myriad of smartphone screen sizes in your web design. We talk a lot about responsive design and how it can help you to provide a seamless experience to visitors no matter the device - that preparedness is only more important now as a new consideration must be made for the rise of the phablet. The good thing is that as adoption of these devices increases, you can fit more into the mobile experience with the larger screen size, which can help with conversions and engagement. If you're considering a website redesign, there is now one more reason to ensure it's responsive and one more screen size to consider.
