The company was founded in 1989 by publisher Stuart Rosenthal and his wife, Judy, the associate publisher. Their award-winning content covers health, financial, career, housing, travel and arts topics, as well as local events and feature stories. Readers of our print editions pick up more than 158,000 copies each month at more than 2,100 local distribution sites include home delivery to individuals all over the country. Their informational market is the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD areas helping people find the resources, news, recreational activities, and health information they need. In addition, we publish print and online resource guides and present free community events in the Greater Washington D.C. area.
The Beacon Newspapers has been a well established organization for providing information to people over the age of 50 for more than two decades. Traditionally, the organization has operated as a print/publications organization providing insightful information in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD markets via a regular newspaper to over 150,000 distributors. As the landscape of our country continues to change more people over the age of 50 are interested in not only the rich and original information the Beacon Newspaper offered, but wanted to obtain it online and engage with peers in their surrounding communities. The challenge was clear; create an information rich online resource that was well organized, easy to manage, and allowed the community to contribute.
Unleashed Technologies, LLC set forth a plan to bring the Beacon Newspapers to the web leveraging its past performance in the publications and print market. The new website would use the Drupal platform as its core technology for strong centralized management capabilities and a scalable platform that allowed for custom integration/development.
The solution would need to be friendly to those with poor vision and be very intuitive to those that spend a minimal amount of time on the web. Design elements and font-related capabilities would be strongly considered, along with ease of registration and providing the beginning steps to an engaged over 50 audience.
The results of the project were more than successful. Its immediate benefits included:
- Increased Visibility on Search Engines
- 100% Traffic Volume Increase (To Date)
- W3C Compliant Website Adhering to Web Best Practices
- A Robust Content Management System (Powered by Customized Drupal - The MarCC)
- Registered Members, Increased E-Mail Sign-Ups, and Web Engagement
- Stunning Design and Sizable Text
And most of all it created the starting point for online success to a terrific organization dedicated to bringing the best original and valuable content to its target demographic.
