So, you just paid to get rid of your old website and replace it with a brand new content management system. You decide to try to host it on the old godaddy account that you have had since you started your business, and you realize the site is cripplingly slow. Content Management Systems add lots of things your old website may not have had, like the ability to edit your content, display dynamic content, handle comments, and much more. All the added features come with one more thing "more overhead" needed to run them. All these new features doesn't mean your site will be slow though if you are able to find the right host.
When Ben came back from DrupalCon and mentioned how Drupal 8 was going to be built on the Symfony 2 Framework (and was talked about in this blog post here) I was beyond excited. I've used Symfony on the past (both versions 1 and 2), and by far it's probably my favorite framework to work with in PHP. I've used others, like Cake, CodeIgniter and Zend, and I've even created one of my own just for fun. And so far, nothing seems to be as light weight and unintrusive as Symfony is. It feels like it moves naturally with PHP code, without trying to change how you program an application.
If you have not already heard about Cloud Foundry, it is a recently hot and upcoming Open Platform as a Service project that allows for easy application deployment and scaling. The project is sponsored by VMware and has a hosted solution, which is currently in beta testing, found at cloudfoundry.com. Thanks to AppFog, PHP support was recently added to Cloud Foundry. With this additional support, Cloud Foundry is truly becoming a well rounded Platform which can support a NoOps approach to application deployment.
Day 2 at Drupalcon offered a number of great sessions for developers, project managers, and hybrids alike. The best one was the discussion behind the Symfony2 framework and a slight discussion of how it may be integrated into Drupal 8. I had been aware of Symfony2 before Dries mentioned it in his keynote on Tuesday, but this session definitely awoke me to how awesome Symfony2 can be. Do yourself a favor, take 5 minutes, and read about Symfony2 here: http://symfony.com/symfony-in-five-minutes.
Let's not kid ourselves when we say that the conversion of visitors to clients (on the web) for service firms greatly differs from that of a product or retail company. The very nature of service work is a direct connection of intellectual capability coupled with a personal acceptance that is hard to create on the web. The question then becomes how do we create that one to one relationship on the web. Let's look at some of the challenges first.
The benefits of cloud computing are too great to overlook. Especially when it comes to having a business with multiple sites, storing and sharing data can become a very cumbersome without the aid of cloud computing. Having data at a facility designed from the ground up for redundancy minimizes the risk of data loss, while also providing the flexibility to be available from virtually anywhere on the internet. Additionally, issues such as throughput to and from the data are gone with having hosting done at a datacenter. While any random Joe can host a server to store data at an office, a cloud solution at a datacenter could have dedicated gigabit circuits, redundant power, and state-of-the-art cooling systems so that the hardware would have no reason to falter.
