How to Manage Platform Changes in an Evolving Web

Today, platform upgrades are coming in full versions every 12 to 18 months. How do organizations of any type manage this constantly evolving web world? This is a question that often comes up for many people and it's hard to understand what the value of continually upgrading that can sometimes result in a rewrite of custom functionality is.

Responsive Design Is for Everyone!... Right?

If you're marketing or web professional you've been living under a rock if you haven't heard the buzz about "responsive" design. As it buzzes it's away around the internet, design meet-ups, message forums, and web advertisements it's often hard to understand what anything means to it's truest sense. Let's start by understanding what responsive design really is and then help you to understand if it's for you or not.

Today is the first day of the conference and there where several large announcements worth noting to people that engage the Magento platform at any level. As a quick summary those major announcements include:

Education Tracks of Interest at the Imagine Conference for Magento

Magento is providing two distinct tracks for the business of ecommerce and corresponding development during this years conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. I'll be focusing on the business track to help broaden the knowledge base of industry trends, new emerging best practices, and of course new value that can be offered back to our client base. During the conference I'll provide a daily summary of the tracks in our blog for you to follow along with interesting and perhaps also controversial topics. The tracks that I'm planning to attend include:

Day 3 Keynote: Mobile First Is the Future

Today's keynote presentation was about developing and designing with mobile in mind first. Review of the statistics makes it very clear that we are trending toward an entire generation of people/professionals who will never utilize what we would call the "personal computer". What I found interesting was that the largest area of expected for growth is actually in mobile web as opposed to native applications. Great examples of this are echoed by some of the largest consumer companies in the world, such as Southwest, Facebook, Flickr, Expedia, and many more.

eCommerce for Drupal - Where It Needs To Go

Today I attended a track very focused on eCommerce as Drupal traditionally has not carved out a niche in the eRetail market. I was particularly interested as we are a Magento Silver partner and while we've done some terrific work on the Drupal platform for eCommerce it's not nearly as developed or have the focus to manage large retailers without substantial heavy lifting. First here are some of great examples we were given that I'm going to disect:

Defining Focus for Drupal's Future with Mobile In Mind

The first two days of DrupalCon have really focused on the challenges that service firms and the platform itself are facing as Drupal continues to grow as one of the most dominant CMS products in the world. The key initiatives that have been outlined in order to meet those challenges include:

The Business Track for Drupal

Denver DrupalCon kicks off tomorrow for web firms with an all day private training sessions for leaders of the industry. Last year this was extremely valuable as people from all over the industry came to help with solutions for challenges that Drupal firms face everyday. While I'm most excited about this and I'll be providing information on each of the focus areas I wanted to provide the sessions I'm most interested in  coming into Tuesday that take place through Thursday.

Denver DrupalCon Coverage from Unleashed Technologies

Next week is DrupalCon 2012 and Unleashed Technologies will be there to report on what's next in full force. The week-long conference is to be held this year in Denver, Colorado, home of Tebowmania and thin air. Since 2010, the conference has become an increasing valuable resource for sharing best practices and getting a glimpse at what the future has in store as Drupal continues to set the benchmark in the open source community as the premier open source content platform. We'll be out there reporting on the different sessions, educational tracks, and after hours events, ensuring that those unable to attend can still have access to the valuable information about the future of Drupal and experience a bit of DrupalCon.

Why Non-Profits Want to View Web as an Annuity

Blog Banner
Non-Profits live and die by the Request for Proposal (RFP), but there is a better way to help control your costing when talking about managing the web. RFP's by their very nature focus on a "scope of work" or a well defined project that clearly has a beginning and an end. The truth is that the web has become so dynamic that it never stops evolving and there is no end to the project. In addition, many non-profits provide an RFP structure that isn't necessarily in line with what they ultimately want.
