The Drupal Landscape: Drupal 8 (Part 2 of 2)

Blog Banner At the announcement of development efforts of Drupal 8 all I heard was, "Already?". Chatter ensued sending excitement and concern through the huge conference hall...

The Unleashed Technologies team at the conference (Ryan, Ben, and myself) smiled and became excited. While some live in the now only wanting to focus on Drupal 7 we fully realize the only way to survive in the web space is with continual innovation and the realization of an ever evolving market place. The largest and most significant shift in technology is a serious return to best practices in software dvelopment primarily facilitated by unstadardized platform interaction such as the addition of tablets, smartphones, and netbooks.

Everyday less people are using  desktops/laptops to interface with web and to find important information. You already know this and so does the majority of the general public but yet few in the technology sector have done anything at the fundamental core to address this. Drupal starting with version 8 will take that challenge head on creating a fully sustainable development and management platform for smart devices.

This is huge because most people only consider what I refer to as the "presentation" or "public" layer when thinking of mobile, tablet, or other smart device access. What I'm talking about is the actual management, development, and design of the website managed from your smart device. What if you could use these devices effectively? It's hard to imagine isn't it? I can hear your concerns now:

  • Smart Devices are too small to do real work on.
  • That would be cumbersome and network connectivity isn't consistent enough.
  • Can you imagine writing content or doing any level of design work?

Well did you ever imagine watching full length movies on your phone over a streaming 4G connection? Doing live video chat? How about having your phone become your primary computer? My guess is probably not.

This is exciting stuff and Unleashed Technologies can't wait to be ahead of the curve. Instead of just thinking about how the end client considers mobile web and applications isn't it also about how it can enable us to do work more efficiently and effectively for those clients? Hmm.. interesting stuff, let's see what Drupal 8 brings to the table.
